When will my voice get deeper?
The larynx and vocal cords grow during puberty. The voice may crack, feel unstable, or change gradually. Classmates are not a deadline.
Voice change varies widely.
Some voices deepen quickly and obviously. Others change gradually. Adult voices also naturally differ in pitch, resonance, accent, and speaking style.
What voice depth does not measure
- Masculinity
- Testosterone level by itself
- Sexual orientation
- Confidence or leadership
- Whether puberty is complete
Cracking is common
Changing vocal-cord size and coordination can make pitch jump unexpectedly.
Do not force a lower voice
Habitually pushing or straining may create discomfort. Use a relaxed natural voice.
Ask for care when
Hoarseness, pain, breathing difficulty, or voice loss persists, or puberty has not begun by the usual age range.
