Genes plus timing

Why do I have more or less facial and body hair?

Pubic, underarm, facial, chest, leg, and other body hair do not all develop together. Genetics, ancestry, age, and hormone sensitivity create a wide range.

Beards can mature late

Facial hair may continue filling in through the late teens and adulthood. Sparse facial hair alone does not diagnose low testosterone.

Chest hair is optional

Some healthy adult men have little or no chest hair. Others have much more.

Shaving does not change growth

Cut hair can feel blunt or look darker as it grows back, but shaving does not increase follicle number or growth rate.

Body hair is not a ranking system

Hair amount does not establish masculinity, maturity, fertility, strength, or sexual orientation.

When to ask a clinician

Sudden major hair changes, hair growth with other unexpected symptoms, severe skin irritation, or no other signs of puberty by the usual age range deserve professional context.
