Are my periods normal?

The first years after menarche can be irregular because the hormone system is still maturing. “Irregular” does not mean every pattern should be ignored.

The 30-second answer

Early cycles often vary. Menstruation commonly begins between ages 10 and 15, and it can take time for cycles to settle into a more predictable rhythm.

What can vary

Timing

Cycles may come sooner, later, or occasionally skip during the first years.

Flow

Some days are light and some heavier; small clots can occur.

Symptoms

Cramps, tiredness, breast tenderness, headaches, bowel changes, and mood changes vary.

Track without obsessing

Record the first day of bleeding and broad flow level.
Note pain that interferes with school or sleep.
Track medication and major health changes.
Do not treat a period app’s prediction as a command or diagnosis.

When to get care

Routine appointment
Cycles remain very irregular, pain is limiting, or periods have not started by the expected developmental window.

Prompt care
Bleeding repeatedly soaks a pad or tampon every hour, lasts unusually long, causes dizziness, or includes very large clots.

Urgent care
Heavy bleeding comes with fainting, severe weakness, severe pain, or possible pregnancy.
