The usual sequence, with lots of overlap
Breast buds often appear first
A small firm or tender area forms under one or both nipples. One side commonly begins first.
Hair, sweat, oil, and odor increase
Pubic and underarm hair, acne, oilier hair, and stronger body odor may develop on their own schedule.
Height increases quickly
The fastest height growth often occurs after breast budding and before the first period.
Discharge may begin
Small amounts of clear or white vaginal discharge can be a normal effect of estrogen and may begin 6–12 months before the first period.
The first period arrives
It may be red, brown, light, or irregular. Cycles often take time to become predictable.
Development keeps going
Breasts, hips, hair patterns, skin, cycles, and body composition can continue changing for years.
